Endocrinology:
Diagnosis & Treatment for Pet Hormone Conditions

Similar to humans, pets can suffer from conditions due to hormone imbalances. All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care offers complete diagnostic testing through our in-house veterinary lab and through the outside laboratory with which we consult on more complex testing procedures.

Some of the more common hormone conditions we see include:

  • Cushing’s disease
Cushing’s, or hyperadrenocorticism, is caused by the overproduction of hormones from the adrenal gland, which is just on top of the kidneys. It typically affects dogs that are 6 years old or older and can present with symptoms such as:
    • Hair loss
    • Increased appetite
    • Increased drinking and urination
    • Pot-bellied appearance
    • Excessive panting
  • Hypothyroidism in dogs
Caused by a thyroid gland that is not making enough hormone, hypothyroidism in pets usually appears in middle-aged dogs. The thyroid hormone controls metabolism, so dogs with low thyroid tend to have low metabolism. Some symptoms of hypothyroidism are:
    • Hair loss
    • Dry coat
    • Dry skin
    • Thick, puffy skin
    • Weight gain
    • Lethargy
    • Loss of heat cycles
  • Hyperthyroidism in cats
This disorder is caused by an overactive thyroid gland and it typically occurs in older cats. It causes a higher metabolism than normal, which can result in symptoms such as:
    • Weight loss
    • Increased appetite
    • Excessive thirst and urination
    • Vomiting
    • Rapid heart rate
    • Behavior changes (including vocalization)

Most of the endocrine disorders pets experience can be handled at All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care. However, we will refer out for more complicated treatments, such as radioactive iodine therapy for cats with hyperthyroidism.

What Our Clients Are Saying:

I love it here. The staff is very friendly! We brought our puppy here because she was very ill, and as soon as we brought her home, she was back to normal. Everyone is very professional. This is the place I will continue taking my pets to get their check-ups.
